S08E17 Queen Pin

It seems to be a common trend that whilst Sam is always present and quite often a force to be reckoned with in each episode, he rarely gets a chance to shine.  When he has, his integrity has been called in to question.  Think of the episodes involving Jada Khaled, his former NCIS partner (pre-Callen) and even when he was framed for murder.  Queen Pin is Sam’s turn to demonstrate his undercover skills and importantly, he gets to do that without Callen present and without doubting his honour.

The case of the week has an extremely tenuous link to the navy and relates to a case which has not formed part of an episode.  Sam’s drug dealing alias ‘Switch’ was first introduced when investigating rogue undercover NCIS Agent Angelo, who assisted Tyler Brunsen in smuggling the drug Crocodile from Russia using navy ships (S5 Three Hearts).  Here,  it is revealed that Switch was created to try and catch upcoming drug dealer King, who was importing drugs using a civilian navy contractor.  There was no character named King in Three of Hearts, so was this a case previously unseen by the viewer or creative licence?

vlcsnap-2017-03-14-20h57m40s635The issue of continuity and the reason for the team’s involvement disappears in to the ether as the case evolves.  Sam ingratiates himself in to the inner circle of the drug world, which is made easier as he has kept his alias current and in circulation amongst underworld, meaning it is quicker and easier for Switch to make appearances.  There are fake murders and real gunfights with Sam playing his role to perfection.  However as is his want, he allows himself to become personally involved and seems to genuinely enjoy King’s company.  The pair share identity / name stories after King is revealed to be Queen. This ties in directly with Callen’s personal battle when Sam’s alias says he decided to no longer be a solo act.

I realized you can’t get where you want to be alone.  No man’s an island.

Sam has an inherent desire to save everyone and tries to persuade King to give herself up, but she would rather die fighting.

Setting aside the main case of the week, the episode made some interesting comparisons between Callen and Anna’s relationship and that of Kensi and Deeks.  Callen initially pulls away from Anna when they start to become too intimate and vlcsnap-2017-03-14-20h41m39s709Anna realises he still has trust issues, stopping Callen when he tries to explain and offering him as much time as he needs, as she will wait for him.  His hesitation is trust related but lust quickly takes over, with the pair passionately kissing and removing each other’s tops before Hetty interrupts them with her impeccable timing.  The contradiction in Callen’s actions continue when he tells Hetty he threw out his bed as he wants to return to his old self (he and Anna were getting down and dirty on a blanket and his bedroll, on the floor).  His old self is the lone wolf Sam referred to, yet he is not the Callen of early seasons.  Whilst he and Anna are on prisoner escort duty, they are both belting out songs from Grease.  Callen clearly feels comfortable with Anna is a way that could never be imagined with Joelle.  He is struggling with his desire to let Anna in, over the hurt caused by allowing someone to get that close.  There is an underlying feeling that with women, he desperately wants that closeness and allows himself to go ‘all in’ (think Tracy Rossetti in S2 Standoff as well as Joelle).

In contrast, Kensi and Deeks are an established couple, living together and in a mature relationship.  They spent many seasons flirting and dealing with their own trust issues before jumping all in, and since then have developed in to a stable couple who fully trust each other.  Their love is demonstrated through subtle touches and actions.  They have honest and frank discussions about their feelings towards Ahmed Han Asakeem, the terrorist from the season eight premier who indirectly caused Kensi’s injuries, and the prisoner whom Callen and Anna are escorting.  vlcsnap-2017-03-14-20h54m01s103Deeks repeats in several scenes about how he would like to exact his revenge.  Kensi is accepting and philosophical about him and her injury.  Deeks doesn’t seem able to let go and yet again there is a peek in to the violence that lives deep inside.  The return of Asakeem in the seventeenth episode suggests that he will feature heavily in the finale, with the implication of a possible confrontation between him and Deeks.  Will Deeks cross the line again ?  Will he suffer the consequences?  Another plot line which will return, maybe next season is the internal affairs investigation in to Deeks.  Hetty informs Deeks that Whiting is recovering from her gunshot wounds and he confessed his sins to a possibly dying adversary.  Interesting times ahead for the detective, and something he hasn’t yet told Kensi.

Queen Pin was a much more satisfying episode than last week’s.  The narrative was fluid, the characters solid, and continued to use partner changes to forward the storyline.  Callen can’t explore his private journey with his father or his trust issues with Anna if Sam is in tow, and so for a consecutive episode, they have been separated.  In fact the partners shared no screen time at all.  With two simultaneous cases on the go, the team were short-staffed.  Where Granger had previously accompanied Nell in the field, this time she was temporarily partnered with Kensi, which left Deeks to back up Sam.  There was some predictability, with King turning out to be a Queen (in her first scene, her fellow drug dealer deferred to her), with the real bad guy being the District Attorney who was successfully arresting (and this removing) the competition.

Episode long undercover missions have been severely lacking and it was great to get back to the show’s roots and also to see Sam shine in his own right.  Hopefully season nine will enable all the field agents to showcase their talents with undercover missions – missions that last more than five minutes.  This may be a crucial episode for Callen and his trust issues (has he allowed himself to trust Anna, or is it more lust?  Is Anna genuine or manipulating him?)  And upon further review, Queen Pin is definitely pivotal in the run up to the season’s end, particularly in light of the return of Asakeem and the strength of Deeks’ feelings towards him.

What did you think of the episode?  Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.

Nice review!! I think I agree with almost everything. I may add that I think that Sam and Callen being apart in the last couple of episodes it’s intentional . They don’t work together since the Joelle episode, maybe there’s a little tension between them being Sam and Michelle the ones that set him up with Joelle or maybe there’s another reason we still don’t know. On the other hand we see Deeks and Kensi and how good they deal with things and I must said that I am intrigued by Deeks dark side, he can become quite impulsive and reckless when it’s time to defend the women in his surroundings, I’ll love that the show explore more of that side of him. Kensi doesn’t surprise me, she is a rock, she may had her setbacks but she is amazingly mature about all that happened to her. Love her. And about Sam ,I am at odds because I have the feeling that something major will happen with his character, I still don’t buy that he and Michelle didn’t even suspected of Joelle, I don’t know…something it’s not right. I think it’s a nice episode that set things up to the season finale…I’ll say it again, nice review and I love your insights about the ep.

You may be onto something. It was said that Sam will have a catastrophic event happen, perhaps to his family. Either way, what happens and how Sam reacts could change everything.

Your review was right on. I agree, with one exception, is Anna ATF or NCIS as she clearly told the young boy in Kulinda that she was a federal agent, showing ID but no badge. Is the background/security check still being done & why is it taking so long. With no security clearance, she cannot work for ATF or any other Federal Agency for the same reason. So, how is it that Anna can walk into a high security facility and OPS with no security clearance? Did the writers forget about this requirement for everyone who works for and/or helps out a Federal Agency without following “proper protocol/procedure and regulations”, before they had Hetty ask Anna to “help out”? Must have or else Anna would not be “helping out” at NCIS!!!

donelle123 – If not mistaken Anna was a US Marshall as she was wearing a vest that had US Marshall when she first helped out the team. I would assume her security clearance came from working there.

Forgot this other item. If Anna is ATF, how can she be helping another Federal Agency when these agencies do not like to share information much less personnel!!! #justsaying

The are collaborations between agencies, if you remember the team worked with the FBI, with DEA and those are federal agencies too. If I remember well they work with ATF too in a previous season .

Your reviews go into detail and analysis of characters which I enjoy, but I don’t agree with some of your observations in this episode. I don’t think that Callen and Sam working separately doesn’t indicate anything wrong in their partnership. While Callen is handling personal issues (Old Tricks), they’d be no point in having Sam tag along. In this episode, somebody had to bring Asakeem back, and it was obvious Deeks couldn’t do it. What’s with the idea that Callen submits to lust? That’s just way out there and completely off base IMO. Lust implies no emotional connection and that’s something we’ve NEVER seen with Callen. He’s had feelings for Anna since Season 7 (and pretty strong ones if he called her) especially knowing the grief he’d get from Sam and Arkady. I think he just realized he has to take a chance again (connects to the “no man is an island”). I think Kensi and Deeks while still definitely in love have changed because of events this season. Kensi seems more mature and confident after her ordeal while Deeks seems not so much at ease. I liked seeing Switch again (but sure that cover’s done), but wonder what the writers will do with Michelle. Now that the actress is in another show, her character kind of leaves Sam hanging. Interested to see what happens with Asakeem and how he figures in the finale.

I really like your reviews!! You seem to put a lot of time and thought into each one which is nice; they’re not just a rehash of the plot.
I do think some of your comments are off base in this review, though. Callen (none of the team members) has NEVER doubted Sam’s integrity or honor. That’s absolutely untrue. There’s a big difference between worrying about decisions someone might make and thinking the person lacks integrity or honor. They look out for each other, and there have been plenty of times when Sam has questioned things Callen has done, but neither has ever doubted the other’s core values.
And I totally disagree that Callen gives way to lust. No way! Lust implies a lack of emotional connection, and we have never seen Callen with a woman because of lust–and that would definitely be something Sam would have a talk with him about. Callen has difficulty making personal connections–difficulty trusting and allowing himself to be vulnerable–but that is the reason he doesn’t have many relationships. When he and Anna do get physical, I think it’s because he wants to trust her, not because he lusts after her. (After all, he’s had strong feelings for her since season 7.) This seems connected to the conversation between Sam and King about no man being an island. And if it had been lust, they would not have engaged in such playful banter in the car. I also don’t see Callen becoming a lone wolf again or even wanting to go that route, not after everything that’s happened and all the people that are now part of his life. That doesn’t make sense to me. It makes more sense that he means he wants to go back to how he was before Joelle. Before Joelle Callen never cared about things, material objects like the dining set–but that changed when he was with Joelle. Now, he wants to be free of those things that have no meaning for him and focus on what matters. I think he wants to focus on his family and on Anna. I agree that Kensi and Deeks have grown and matured as a couple, but they have grown differently: Kensi is more confident and assured and Deeks seems less confident or troubled. The bullpen scene, though funny, showed that something’s up with Deeks. When someone no longer does things that once were second nature (like Deeks and surfing), there’s a reason. In the van, Kensi asked if that was an attitude she heard and if he was all right. And during their backup for Sam, Deeks questioned Sam’s professionalism and decision-making more than once. I am interested in seeing where this new road with Asakeem leads.

I totally disagree with how great it was to see Sam shine, the guy comes off very full of himself and sorry,, but not a pro or a good actor ,, I think the thing with Callen and Anna is a wonderful addition to the show, the actors are both great(the best) and do the part perfect and very beleivable, of course any part Callen plays comes across so beleivable and sincere and i think its about time he is paired with a soul mate,, and not be made out to be a failure in that department a Sam continuosly points out, and yes I agree somthing will definetly change because of theJoelle and Sabatino thing, remember Michelle vouched for Sabatino, and Sam was quick to back Michelle, very underhanded on Sams and Michelle part,, people will never trust those 2 again.. Deeks and Kensi are great, I am hoping the thing with Deeks and the hatefull person from LAPD will dissapear, after all he shot the dirty cop because the cop was trying to kill the girl,, I am baffled here! is it not a part of this show to shoot the bad guys,, double standards to say the least,,, what happened to Admiral Chetwick from a couple of weeks ago we all thought he would be a great addition to the show, seems he just kind of dropped from the scene,, hopefully some smart writer will see fit to bring him back
here is hoping Deeks and Kensi will finally get married they have had enough hurdles to bear it seems, specially with Hetty and her little trouble making jealous self,, We are all hoping to see more of Callen and his real family becomig close and introduce Anna to his own family, I know everyone loves Arkady he is very professional, when he plays the comical or the serious side we don’t see very much of him anymore and judging from his and Callens past he would welcome the thing with Anna and Callen,,, the show is getting better again please keep up the good work, hate to see this show go down hill

THANK YOU! FINALLY someone who agrees with me –>”I am hoping the thing with Deeks and the hatefull person from LAPD will dissapear, after all he shot the dirty cop because the cop was trying to kill the girl,, I am baffled here! is it not a part of this show to shoot the bad guys,, double standards to say the least,,,” –> Deeks shot Sullivan twice in the head to save Kensi and he was hero for that but he shoots a dirty cop to save his informant (I think Tiffany was his informant) and he’s a murderer. Double standard for sure.

But I liked your review because you gave an intriguing insight into all aspects of the episode. And you are NOT biased which is a rarity in reviews for this show.
If Callen feels a comfort with Anna that he never could have felt with Joelle, why did he consider having children with Joelle? I think that’s pretty darn comfortable. 😉 As for Deeks telling Kensi what he told Whiting – wasn’t there a conversation in her car (after IA episode) where she told Deeks she had figured out that he had killed Doyle?

I think you’re mistaken. Callen only said that he and Joelle were back on track, and that’s a long way from seriously thinking of having children. Also, everyone who defends Deeks killing of Boyle seems to ignore that Deeks is–and was then–an officer of the law. If an LAPD officer isn’t going to obey the law (no matter how “justified”), than why should others?

As an officer of the law, Deeks is sworn to serve and protect. He protected Tiffany. Deeks did his job, at great risk to himself, since if any of Boyle’s dirty cop friends had found out, Deeks would have ended up like Steadman’s dead second partner.

      2. Bliss

But if Deeks HAD obeyed the law there would be no need to try to cover up his killing of Boyle which he has done. There would have simply been an IA investigation and Deeks would have been exonerated. The fact that he has covered up what he did shows that he knows that his killing of Boyle was illegal. After all, he’s also an attorney. Being LAPD doesn’t make him above the law. At the time Deeks killed Boyle, Tiffany was not in immediate danger of being killed.

I’m not mistaken. Callen specifically said that he wasn’t ruling out the possibility of having children as he and Joelle were back on track and he was still ‘young enough’. That was when Sam delivered the awesome line about “lower case G’s running around.” Can’t remember episode name.
As for Deeks, please explain WHY Deeks is a hero for killing Sullivan but a murderer for killing Boyle. We saw what Sullivan did to Kensi but not what Boyle did to Tiffany. Deeks said he was protecting Tiffany and that he killed Boyle because Boyle was going to kill Tiffany. *I* am taking Deeks at his word on what happened because we the viewers don’t know what happened and most likely never will know exactly what went down in that motel room.
And would Hetty knowingly keep a murderer on the team? No.

Perhaps this episode foreshadows the return of Paul Angelo.
It’s true, Sam wants to save everyone. Too bad he has not yet learned that this is not possible.
I really enjoyed reviewing “Switch”; Sam undercover he always does a great game!
I think that the “separation” G / Sam was interesting: we have a choral episode vision with different location. I really enjoyed it.
Grisha and Anna likes me even though G singing Grease is exaggerated: I thought he did not know even the existence of something so frivolous. And I think he was happy with Joelle; She made him feel “normal.” Anna is an agent: their lives will never be “normal”.
Lust as the desire to possess, experiment, healthy and crisp sex, in a pair is definitely there, and it is interesting especially when the couple is feeling: it is magnificent to make just sex with the one you love!
The Densi are a dull pair: I have never seen the passion between them. Guilt, I believe, of the fact that the actors are in-laws. Indeed, in episodes such as “Rage” (6×20) Ms. Ruah is much more “free and self-confident”: the kisses are exchanged with Mr. O’Donnell appear real and he’s naked in bed. The same goes for Mr. Olsen: the kiss in “Plan B” (2×22), the interaction with the scene-partner in “Sacrifice” (3×05), electric chemistry between Martin and Eva!, and “Parley” (4×23).
The lack of fire, chemistry, sensual and sexual involvement is the discordant note of Densi torque; as opposed to G and Anna, their erotic charge is equal to that of a grammar book!
The couple has existed for some years and the passion can not be over already. They’re very boring.
Nothing surf for Marty: he became mother-lasagna.
I was right: the Densi ruined Martin!
Watching other police shows, it has happened that a cop killed a fellow to defend someone. All history of Internal Affairs does not make sense. Only it serves to lengthen the stock.
You wrote: next season. Really? The nine season?

Wanted to save everyone it’s part of their job description I think, it couldn’t be done but they still try, and that’s why we love them. About Joelle I think you’re wrong , a kind of man like Callen don’t want “normal” that’s more Sam who wanted a traditional family. Callen is different, he tried to like “normal” and like he said she was not his type…About Densi , it’s not about passion their relationship, it’s about friendship, about caring and be for each other , it’s about the simplicity of pure love, and I personally enjoy that as much as I enjoy the passionate type of relationship that Callanna have. They’re both amazing in their own way.

Now there is Anna and is easy to say that G did not want a normal life with Joelle, but we all know, we all have seen what he was clear with her. G and Joelle were a nice couple, he was happy indeed. Sam loves Tom, obvious that he wants a normal life (if possible) to your friend.
I’m a mom and I believe that pure love is what you feel towards their children.
Your words on Densi report are true, you’re right, but you’ve also described a married couple hundred years old. A still so young couple should spurting passion from every pore.
MartyParty, the surfer, friend of Kip Brigham pool, would never have fallen in love with a pent as Kensy Marie. In fact, from MartyParty he became ShaggyGoofy, the most ridiculous character of the series.

I think if you are happy in a relationship you don’t break it off, they leave each other in a very friendly way, without conflict ,so my thoughts are that they were not very attached to each other, he didn’t even wanted to meet her parents, and that’s never a good thing in my opinion. On the other hand, he already introduced Anna to his father and they are not even officially together. Things go faster when you feel a connection with the other person. About Kensi, I think they complement each other, he already had his share of bimbos to have fun and with Kensi he have a person that he truly respect and admires and with him she found herself be more relaxed and open. I agree with you that we never see passionate exchanges between them not even at the beginning of their relationship and that I concede it’s a little bit odd ,but in the end I love them as a couple as they are. For a more passionate couple we have Callanna now ….😂😉😍

I did not think the singing section was out of character for Callen. If you look back at the earlier episodes, he has a definite sense of humor and the absurd (after all, he beat Sam in a karaoke contest in season 1). Also, as agents, being aware of cultural things would be a definite advantage for undercover work.
As for lust, I still think there’s a big difference between lust and passion. Lust has no emotional core (think Basic Instinct), while passion is definitely based on emotion (think Bridges of Madison County, Titanic, or From Here to Eternity). I don’t think Hollywood does passion as well as they used to (lots of sex, true, but too many superhero and animated movies), so that was one thing I liked about the scene between Callen and Anna. It rang true emotionally. There was the scene in season 4 or 5 between Sam and Michelle when they were both undercover. That was another scene that was passionate and rang true emotionally.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the relationship between Kensi and Deeks, but it seems lacking in passion, and that makes it boring to me. They remind me of a next door couple that have kids, a house, and are living in suburbia.
I’m wondering if they might bring Michelle back (if she’s in Quantico, I just read that it has been cancelled).

@ embrent: excuse my English, I use google translator and I I combine so much trouble. This translator runs only simple names and I wrote “Tom” instead of Grisha. I wanted to correct but are not capable and I was wrong and my proper post it was Posted. I want to delete it. 😦

It is very interesting when we look at the same thing and see different things.
I want (exact written, this time!) G happy; I do not care if he has a history of “normal”; I want him to love and be loved in return.
The character of Martin Deeks was nice at first; sad but with joy, alone, cop, lawyer, womanizer, mysterious, with a destructive Max Gentry in the head and heart. I remember him well, and that way I liked so much. The romance demand from fans has greatly affected his character: he is no longer himself, Martin Deeks is gone. Shaggy is the silly brother of Martin; as a human being he did have an involution, a regression and with the original Martin he has nothing to do; Max Gentry would eat he in one bite!
Patience; it will be for another life. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Don’t worry I understand that you mean Grisha. I never thought of Deeks in that way, you may have a point there, but Densi it’s highly demanded by the fans and maybe give the relationship more screen time than the two separate characters. This season we had the Kensi storyline and that was amazing and I hope we can see more of Deeks’s story and past. I love them as a couple but sometimes as you say it everything is focus on them as a couple and not on them like two different people with two different backgrounds worthy of being explored.Maybe next season…who knows?😉

I started to follow NCIS LA because I like so much Mr. O’Donnel and then I fell in love the character Martin Deeks. For me it would be great to see G and Martin work together … but it was not possible.
Sam is a good counterpoint, a little whiny, a little too full of himself, but loves G and that’s the important thing.
Ms. Ruah is very beautiful but the character Kensi not like me. Perhaps in the first season, when she never spoke; with the passing of the years I gradually found unbearable.
I’m not Densi, and I never will be.
Kensi and Martin (because Deeks, he has this name, damn), they could be a fantastic couple of partner and friends … with benefits. The love affair has ruined the series and I have stopped loving.
I do not want to see them married, for heaven’s sake! You think, I hope that the Mole, with a capital M, is Max Gentry that sends them all to hell. Oh, it would be fun!
Right now, I just want to know G safe. The rest does not interest me anymore. 😦

My experience was in the opposite direction, I start watching for Deeks and love his character but then I totally got crazy about Callen, his storyline is the most compelling for me and my focus is more in him . An unrelated question..you’re Italian? Because I lived there like for 11 years…love it . Speriamo che ci siano buone cose in arrivo per Grisha questa stagione! Ciao!

Spero che lui riesca a essere felice e sereno… anche se amo il suo lato di lupo solitario. La sua figura è così ombrosa, distaccata, sofferente. Bellissimo personaggio!

To me when Callen stopped his intimate moment with Anna, he slipped into an alias to stop his emotional pain, but continued the moment to satisfy his lust. Just my thoughts on the subject. This was a well thought out, professional, and insightful review.

An interesting idea, but I think there is a distinct difference between natural, healthy human sexual desire and sexual lust. Sexual lust (like the lust after wealth or ambition) carries with it the connotation of something that is overpowering to the point of being destructive; it is a force that is essentially selfish wherein a person is only concerned about fulfilling his/her sexual needs without consideration of his/her partner and there is often no emotional connection or desire for such (the difference between a sexual addict and someone who desires sex with a specific partner with whom they have an emotional connection). I don’t see any of the men characters in this show as giving in to lust; however, they all do have a natural, healthy sexual desire.
